In its northern sections, TEEM touches on agricultural lands, which are notable for the presence of the historical “Cavo Marocco” and many traditional farmhouses. Further on, when TEEM reaches the southern section, it runs through a built-up area that is notable also for the presence of the River Lambro. The municipalities directly affected by the motorway route are: Paullo, Tribiano, Mulazzano, Dresano, Vizzolo Predabissi, Casalmaiocco, Melegnano and Cerro al Lambro. Some neighbouring municipalities will have a number TEEM-related works carried out on their territories. In this area, the road is predominantly (65%) raised to about two meters above the level of the surrounding plains.
The 455-metre-long Cologno artificial tunnel to be built using a cut-and-cover technique will reduce the impact of the road where it meets the towns of Casalmaiocco and Dresano. Two steel viaducts will be built to serve as overpasses spanning the River Lambro and the Milan-Bologna railway line. One will be a motorway overpass (1,604 meters long) and the other, 840 metres long, will serve to connect the “Sant’Angiolina” Provincial Highway (SP 17) with the Via Emilia State Highway (SS 9). The new infrastructures will help ease east-west connections around the town of Melegnano which is particularly prone to congestion.
Two motorway interchanges will also be built. One at Vizzolo Predabissi, which will allow the connections to the local road network through the new road links to “Sordio-Bettol” (SP 159) and Via Emilia, and the other in the town of Cerro al Lambro, leading on to the A1 Milan-Naples motorway.
Finally, TEEM will also carry out environmental compensation works (Special Environmental Project no. 4 ‘”Cavo Morocco-Cologno”, and Special Environmental Project no. 5 “Lambro-Melegnano”). The works are aimed at the re-naturalization of the area. Further, a significant design change has been effected by shifting the axis of the planned route so as to safeguard Cavo Morocco, which, in the earlier version, would have been affected by the road. The change has made it possible to re-route TEEM away from Cascina Belpensiero and Cascina Virolo. The zone is also earmarked for further substantial environmental compensation works.
